The Underpants
About the Show
By Carl Sternheim. Adapted by Steve Martin.
Not since Monica Lewinsky's thong almost toppled a presidency has a pair of
panties caused such a national fuss.
In "The Underpants," actor-writer Steve Martin has adapted the 1910 social
comedy by German playwright Carl Sternheim and turned it into a hilarious,
over-the-top farce centered on an unruly pair of knickers.
Sticking closely to Sternheim's plot, Martin and director Barry Edelstein
maintain the original setting - a modest, middle-class home in 1910 Germany
- as well as the play's statements on feminism, anti-Semitism and class
distinctions.
The titular undergarments belong to Louise , a lovely young hausfrau unhappily married to Theo Maske a blustery, bourgeois bureaucrat who treats his spouse like a servant.
When Louise's frilly pantaloons accidently fall to her ankles during a parade for the kaiser, it causes a scandal and sets in motion a zany chain of events. A foppish poet, and a nebbishy barber, entranced by the brief glimpse of her underwear, vie to become Louise's lover.
